BSTAN Homes Managing Director Becky Olubukola denounced the worsening housing deficit in the country.
The situation, she noted, was caused by the currency worsening against the Naira.
She urged the federal government to find ways to improve the exchange rate to make housing affordable for citizens.
Olubukola, who revealed it in Abuja over the weekend, during an event to unveil the 2021 National Home Fair, noted that the situation has become very worrying, even in the real estate sector.
According to her, the increase in the exchange rate has led to an increase in the cost of materials, making it uncomfortable, unsustainable and unaffordable for the common man.
“The effect of our naira rate against the dollar is currently hitting the housing sector hard; now is not the right time for us because the cost of materials has increased. And because of the passion to provide affordable housing, we always do our best, even to Nigerians in the diaspora, ”she said.
While emphasizing the need for the government to subsidize the housing sector, Olubukola said Nigeria has the capacity to produce all the materials needed to build an affordable apartment for every citizen.
The boss of BSTAN berated the weakness of the government’s mortgage system and said the company had made plans to endow Nigerians with 10 plots of land worth N100 million as part of efforts to depopulate the urban areas and increase business opportunities in rural areas.
She said the initiative was part of the organization’s efforts to reduce slums in urban areas, and warned that if Nigeria fails to eliminate slums in cities, slum dwellers will create problems for them. city habitants.
According to her, BSTAN would focus on lucrative rural areas with infrastructure development and put around 100 affordable housing units.
“We have to work together, develop the slums; stop using the poor as a political thug’s tool, stop using them as a tool to stay in power.
“True leadership empowers those around it; to suppress the poor is not to lead, keep them so that they will remain as they are one day, they will face you and bite you.
“When you provide shelter for every member of society, you have provided jobs, food, businesses in these environments.
“We are proposing the concept of subway shelter in the 36 states of the country to reduce migration from rural to urban areas and create professional life, create urbanization in these rural environments and many others,” he said. -she explains.
