Despite weekly killings, Nigerian police chief says security has “stabilized considerably”


Despite widespread killings across the country, the Inspector General of Police (IGP), Usman alkaline, said security had “stabilized considerably”.

He said the police force under his leadership “is doing its best to maintain peaceful coexistence in the country.”

Mr Alkali said this Thursday in Abuja during the weekly briefing organized by the presidential communications team.

The IGP statement comes against the backdrop of multiple killings in various parts of the country almost daily.

PREMIUM TIMES had repeatedly reported how dozens of Nigerians were killed with little or no intervention from the security agencies.

At least 200 people, including security personnel, have been killed by non-state actors in the past four weeks across the country.

Every part of the country suffers from one form of insecurity or another, while others face a spike in unsolved crimes.

Isolated cases

But the IGP, in its remarks, said the force was reviewing its public security strategies in order to deal with what it described as “isolated cases of crime in parts of the country.”

“The security situation in the country has stabilized considerably although we still face isolated cases of crime and threats to public safety, peace and security in parts of the country.

“The Nigerian police, however, are constantly reorganizing their public safety strategies to adequately contain the prevailing and emerging crime trends across the country. “

He also noted that “the strong collaboration between the police, the armed forces and other security agencies has led to the improvement of the security situation in the country”.

“Let me state categorically that the new spirit of collaboration between the Nigerian Police, the Nigerian Armed Forces, the Department of State Services and other security and intelligence agencies in the country has indeed stimulated a united front for reduce crime and crime nationwide, ”he said. noted.

Alakli said the force was deploying a “well-coordinated intelligence operation to combat the banditry, kidnappings and other forms of insecurity plaguing the country.”

“We are developing well-coordinated intelligence operations to confront bandits, kidnappers and armed secessionist groups by strengthening intelligence gathering efforts and utilizing capabilities. Improving intelligence sharing by strengthening interagency collaboration with the military and other security agencies is also sought after.

“We are deepening community engagement to weaken the recruitment campaign for secessionist groups. We are also improving our public relations and regaining the trust of citizens through better community engagement and strengthening ethical policies in the fight against corruption, ”he said.

The boss of the police said that there is a “strong collaboration between the Nigerian police and its foreign counterpart with the aim of controlling crime across the borders of the country”.

Mr Alkali said that the use of technology is also being explored by the police, to help them in their fight against crime and criminality.

“The Nigerian National Police Command and Control Center, the Nigerian Police Crime and Incident Database and the Nigerian Police Crime Analysis Center are technology-driven facilities that are used to detect and fight criminals and are also available for the public to use for what we call ‘Rescue me’ and once you download the app and use it appropriately regardless of your position, your request or complain, it will arrive directly in our control room in a few minutes and we will respond to your request.
